Listening to: Rush - Summertime Blues
The entire southeastern quarter of town has no power. Nothing, nadda, zippo. No power to the gas pumps, no traffic lights, no theatre, no fast food, no nothing. Including no classes at the university. X( And the bookstore was closed, too. Big white paper signs on all the doors, with the scribbled message "College closed due to power outage."
I've never seen the university closed due to a mere power outage. Not like this. Where're the generators? Where's our UPS systems? It seems I've gotten spoiled by working in info tech--I expect mere power outages to be a minor annoyance, with all critical systems up and running as per normal. Hah, if you try to get to UCFV's website, it's down too! Not even the web server has backup power, and that's got to be the limit of ridiculousity.
This philosophy of mine is one reason why I want to get myself a few big UPS systems for redundant backup power. I'm running servers here, I'm supposed to have at least 99.9% uptime (apart from maintenance backups every three months). Of course, at the moment, that wouldn't do me any good, as I don't have control of my connection to the outside world. But if I could power the router and modem as well, then it would all be cake until hitting the ISP's end, which is where I'm content to let the buck stop for now. |
Very strange. I wonder what could have caused such an outage?
That's a little sad. Even CVS, a small pharmacy about 10 minute walk from my park, has a backup generator. Kroger, Meijer, and some fast food restaraunts (Poncho's, anyone?) also have backup generators. I remember one outtage we left the park and started driving around from store to store, and restaraunts to kill time and feed ourselves =p
AND. My park is in the middle of nowhere. Or at least was, until the School rooted in and started bringing in more people, and thus more housing...
